UV sanitising is occasionally discussed as an alternative to chemical systems. UV disinfection can work on many surfaces, is ‘easy’ to control and is relatively well understood but there are several drawbacks to the system.
The ultraviolet portion of light is described in three wavelengths. UVA and UVB reach Earth’s surface and are responsible for skin ageing, sunburn and skin cancer. UVC is the most dangerous component and is blocked by the upper atmosphere. This UVC radiation can be used to inactivate viruses and bacteria but is extremely dangerous. In comparison to UVA and UVB, exposure to UVC could lead to blindness and severe burns in only a few seconds.
UV can degrade polymers (plastics) and the application is limited in restricted spaces containing complex shapes.
