Sensor accuracy
There are several hand-held meters commonly used throughout agriculture to monitor biocide levels. The best of these fall into the category of volatile organic compound (VOC) sensors. There are several drawbacks to using these sensors:
• As general VOC sensors, they are in no way selective or tailored to sensing your chosen biocide. Extreme care must be taken to eliminate sample cross-sensitivity / contamination in your environment.
• Some units permit surrogate calibration using alternative standards such as carbon monoxide. If your meter has been calibrated in this manner, it should be noted that this incurs a measurement error penalty. We have seen record of this being as high as of 20%!
• Some sensors have a zero point accurate of perhaps ±3ppm with drift up to ±2ppm per month from date of calibration. If calibrated six months ago, unit accuracy has a tolerance of ±15ppm!
• Some sensors note a warm-up time of up to 18 hours. The impact of temperature on measured value can be ± several ppm
Our fixed equipment benefits from a highly selective sensor, calibrated against laboratory samples of the target chemical and it is intrinsically immune to the temperature effects suffered by movement of hand-held sensors.
