On the 1st of February 2022, Formaldehyde was officially recognised as an approved Active Substance for use in veterinary hygiene, under the UK and EU Biocidal Product Regulations. The report of the Biocidal Products Committee was key to this decision and their investigation quoted several positive points regarding this popular chemical:
“Formaldehyde is effective against a wide variety of microbiological organisms like bacteria, fungi, enveloped and non-enveloped viruses, yeasts and spores.”
“Formaldehyde is non-corrosive and exhibits good material compatibility towards wooden surfaces, bricks, electronic and mechanical equipment. It is biodegradable and not persistent, stable during storage.”
“The fumigated substance can reach all inaccessible areas and crevices in the animal facility.”
“It enables a high control of infectious diseases.”
“all alternative products are ineffective by comparison to Formaldehyde or damaging to the chick/egg.”
(alternatives are) “at least 10 times more expensive than Formaldehyde”
